TWENTY-TWO

SINCLAIR RUSHED IN, flushed and out of breath. “Damn, it’s chaotic out there. I was at the clinic to get Mrs. Bennet’s ankle x-rayed when a truck slid off the road in front of me, nearly causing a multi-car pile-up. After I sorted that mess out, Littleton called, but reception was bad so I couldn't hear him properly – although I’m pretty sure he said something about sheep?”

Barbara shook her head. “The town’s gone crazy on account of the weather.”

Sinclair shrugged off her jacket and sank into the chair at Littleton’s desk, heaving a sigh of relief. “Any news on Evie?”

“It looks like her car broke down,” Savage said, stretching his neck. The tension of the last few days was getting to him. “We were just about to go and look for her again.”

“I’ve pinged her phone.” Thorpe glanced up from his screen. “Her last known location was two miles from where she broke down. Seems she was walking towards Ignacio.” Ignacio was a small town on the Southern Ute Reservation.

Savage grabbed his jacket. “Let’s go.” He didn’t want to think what state she’d be in, if by some miracle, she’d managed to survive the night. Perhaps she’d found shelter at the casino, or in someone’s residence.

Savage drove, while Thorpe consulted an app on his iPad. They passed the Ridgewater Casino heading into town, the gleaming building shimmering against the otherwise barren landscape.

“You sure she’s not there?” Savage asked.

“Nope, but her location pointed south of here, near the Community Center.”

“Maybe she went there for help.” Although, he couldn’t see how she’d walk two miles in the snow. They’d struggled to expand their search radius to more than a mile, and they had flashlights and adequate protection against the elements. She would have been in her work attire.

They were almost there when Barb’s voice punctured through the radio static. “Dalton, come in? Hello, Dalton?”

Savage grabbed the radio. “Barb, what’s up?”

“Oh, thank God. I’ve just had a call from Sam Walking Deer at the Ridgewater Casino. It’s too terrible. He says his security team have found a body behind the hotel.”

Savage’s heart dropped.

Shit.

Please let it not be her.

He couldn’t get those laughing blue eyes out of his head.

“Why didn’t they call the Tribal Police if they found a body on the res?”

“It’s a white woman, Dalton, and she’s lying in the snow.”

It was her.

“We’re too late,” he snarled, yanking on the steering wheel. Thorpe clung onto the door handle as the car skidded around in a U-turn, drifting on the icy road.

“We’re on our way, Barb,” Savage yelled at the radio. “Send the ambulance and get Ray and Pearl down there.” He put his foot down.

The glow from the casino lit up the dull sky. It was as if the sun had given up this morning and decided to stay blanketed behind the charcoal-gray clouds.

Savage swung the Suburban around the tight corner and into the driveway that led up to the resort. Landscaped gardens were hidden beneath several feet of snow. Only the frozen sculptures stuck out, glaring at them as they sped up to the entrance.
